Junk Drawer...

I found this sketchbook on my bookshelf this morning. I have no recollection of a) buying it or b) doodling any of the sketches inside. Weird. I guess this goes back awhile, as the first page was a "To Do" list from A.P.E. 2005. Anyway, I scanned in the bits and pieces that weren't COMPLETELY embarrassing (meaning, I skipped the first 10-20 pages entirely) and composited them into this:

Some of it's kind of hard to see, and other places have dark grey shadows in the corners. All of that is a result of the book spine not properly fitting on the scanner.

This stuff here is kind of a hodge podge of junk I had laying around. A lot of it is comprised of the tiny thumbnail sketches I've been basing my recent Illustrator pieces off of, others are doodles I scanned with that intention, but ultimately bailed on or never got around to.

And finally, this was another Weekly Sketch Group thing I did for PencilJack, but never posted here.

That's supposed to be the 1939 incarnation of Batman, hence the purple gloves and the smooth, refreshing taste of a cigarette after whupping some assholes'...asshole. Seeing as how I drew it, this struggle, of course, took place off camera and in no discernable environment whatsoever.

Scurcrow

I probably should have thought this one out a little more before diving in.

Here's the original sketch, to make it perfectly clear how absolutely lazy I've become lately.

Garbage...

This was going to be Hellboy VS The Count for the weekly sketchgroup at PencilJack, but I have such a hard time drawing Hellboy I decided to put the kibosh on it. He's such a simple character in concept, and in Mignola's execution, but I have a hell of a time figuring out the perspective on his horns and right hand. Should have planned this one out better, but what are you going to do? I'm going to quit, that's what I'm going to do!

I totally drew all of this in just one day...

EXPLOSION OF PRODUCTIVITY !!!

(click to big ups)

I wish. Actually, this is all the scraps I had floating around on my clipboard. Some of it from a week ago, some from a few months ago, some from the dawn of creation (that brown paper bag puppet that looks like a bear is a figure study of God himself). I really hope to have some time to pick up the pencil again over the summer.

Tetsuooooooh yeah!

I drew something. IN 2009! I win.

More in 6-8 months. Maybe.

A cornicopia of porno-dope-fo-ya...

Whoops! Fooled you! That name is much more titillating than what I'm actually delivering: nothing but random sketch shizz from the last week and a half or so.

The random photographs are in there because I draw a lot of this shit on work meeting hand outs, and my boss likes to tack on the odd pictures she finds when googling the various topics we'll be discussing. Some of my doodles overlap the photos, so the photos are included here as well. Why didn't I just leave out the scribbles that were connected to pictures? Because every single line I make is amazing, and shouldn't be wasted.

The Mighty KC...

Wakka wakka!

I know the likeness is terrible, and the coloring job is..."questionable" at best, but for something that was nothing more than an Illustrator doodle (which last time I apparently lied about shying away from) I'm not going to sweat it too much. I'm actually not horrified by the clothing folds. It's not like I busted out some sweet ass textile origami or anything, but I have a hard time drawing that shit with a pencil, so getting something that doesn't look like a toilet paper mummy with a mouse is a victory in my book. Fun fact: if you "flip horizontal" over and over again in Photoshop, it looks like he's rapidly punching you. Pretend you stole his pudding and watch his fist fury EXPLODE.

Mo' dem doodles:

Also, almost all of this stuff is reference free, for you fuckers who think I can't draw more than a stick figure without looking at a photograph.

Dumbledorks...

So, Suzy has this desktop wallpaper on her work computer of a Prince image I drew about a bazillion years ago that I fucking HATE. The likeness is bad, the coloring is bad, the drawing is bad. It's bad. I keep asking her to change it, but she says she won't until I draw her something else to replace it. I didn't know what else to do, as I don't really want to draw Prince again, so, I figured with Pottermania sweeping the world, and Suzy being a fan of the material, perhaps I'd try giving some of those characters a shot. Below is my very rough, preliminary explorations of some of those muggle fuckers.

The scan quality is shit, as I had to adjust the hell out of my levels in Photoshop to get my super light red pencils to even show up. My goal is to eventually have at least Harry, Snape, Dumbledore and Voldemort in the image, but if I'm feeling ambitious, maybe I'll try to work an owl, or Ron and Hermoine, or Spock or Gimli or one of the other characters I presume are in the books (that I don't read) in there somewhere. But yeah, I think I'm going to try and document my progress here in the blog.

My progress which will probably stop here, because really, how often do I ever finish anything?

Pirates of the AIRribbean! Har.

Another in the kind of air pirates theme we seem to have going now, for some reason. Not that I'm complaining. I was aiming for Ass Pirates, but I'm willing to compromise and get half of what I want.

I don't even know what I'm talking about most days any more.

This one's so wide, I had to shrink the preview image down a lot to get it to fit. As always, click for the bigger version.

Airship mechanic?

I feel like those arms are the mayors of Wonkytown, the face is at least a 6 pack away from attractiveness, and the wrench is all out of perspective, but I'm not positive about any of that. I did use reference for this, so it should have been cake to fix those issues, but the photograph was dimly lit and hard to make out detail in. Ah well, you win some, I'm handsome.

Original sketch.

Off topic, but while I haven't exactly been setting the group blog a blaze, I AM happy to see that looking back I've been a lot more consistent about trying to contribute the last couple of months. I'm going to go ahead and give myself a tiny bit of credit for actually somewhat sticking to at least ONE project for once.

I'm an ass.

Red White and Douche...

Muscle studies, courtesy of the supa awesomez Arnold Schwarzenegger Muscle Gallery.

Aaaaaand, the black and white line art, because I think I fucked him (yeah I did!) by getting carried away with my artsy fartsy attempt at a coloring scheme.

Man, why didn't I color the background green so I could title this RGB?! Why must my genius wit manifest itself after the point of usefulness?!

5.26

I haven't had enough time to myself lately to get on the computer at home and play with PS/tablet, so, back to basics! Ballpoint, non-repro pencil, Pitt pens (fuck Micron) etc. I was able to talk my job into getting me a scanner as a "work expense" so now I can scan the stuff I draw while I'm here. From this week:

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta...

Like I said last post, more to come:

I kinda got lazy over the last 4 or 5 months when I moved, couldn't find my art supplies, and didn't have a working computer/scanner. I'm trying to get back into a regular routine of Monday through Friday daily drawing. This stuff is from this week. I've got a lot more, but I don't think I'm going to scan it, because it's just more of the same. That, and it takes a long ass time to scan and format. It's hard out here for a pimp.

I know I'm flooding the blog lately, and I apologize, but I need to sway the balance some so this isn't "Ryan's other blog."

PS-Those random blips of color aren't mine, they're clip art that was on work memos I was redrawing during a meeting...on the taxpayers dime!
