learning illustrator

This was my first attempt at drawing a picture in Illustrator (and trying to learn how to actually use the program) I had to check out a few tutorials. This image was for a magician friend who was putting together a "magic barmitzvah" website. He requested that I redo the face to make the kid look younger. I haven't gotten around to that yet.

Whoa, that's an awesome effect you got there. I probably wouldn't have guessed that was Illustrator if you hadn't specifically stated so. How did you do it? Did you use a tablet? I assume you must have to get those varying line weights. I also dig the psuedo water color effect. The only way I've ever bothered to learn how to color with the program is using fills. I like how you "decided to learn Illustrator" and in a fucking day you already know more than I do.

Critique wise...Those hands (on the dude) are looking a little wonky. Especially his right, which has six fingers. Also, the magic wand isn't entirely straight, and the elbow on, again, his right side, seems way too high on the arm.

Thats some nice work, particularly if it's your first go at the program. Probably some of your best color work to date. I'm assuming you just did the line-work in Illustrator and the color is Photoshop.

At first I thought it was a wedding picture though. I think it's the harsh lines in the face that make him look older. I also think some of the issues Todd has with the hands could be cleared up by bring his wrists in a little tighter.

thanks for crit! I will definitely work on those spots when I get around to revising it. I didn't even notice the six fingers thing. Ryan guessed right, I did the colors in photoshop. The linework I did in illustrator using the pencil tool and drawing with my mouse, then I applied a brush stroke effect to it to get the tapered line widths. I don't own a tablet but I totally want to get one now that I've seen how great Illustrator is for... well.... illustrating. Todd I think you still know a ton more than I do about this program. I don't know shit.

That is some nice work, Geoff. Good coloring, lines, and nice design with the chair on a tilt. I originally thought the "sixth finger" was part of his hand (like the edge of his palm), but looking at it again, it does look a little confusing. Lose the lines around the chubmaster's muzzle and he'll probably look more kid-aged. Also, you could add a speech balloon saying, "I'm thirteen!"

I'd say that Illustrator is a promising new tool for you.
